Jeep Compass versus Ford Escape

A great daily commuter, the Jeep Compass is one of the prideful members of the Jeep fleet, direct from Toledo, Ohio. It brings a series of updates for 2023. It's off-road capable, as you would expect from anything carrying the Jeep nameplate. But, how does it compare to the Ford Escape, its competitor from Dearborn, Michigan? Let's take a look.

What moves you?

Both feature modern technology. The Jeep Compass comes to market with a single engine. In this case, it's a good one: The Compass gets its power from a new 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 200 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque between 1,750-4,250 rpm. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard, regardless of trim level.

The Ford Escape offers four engine choices. These include a turbocharged three-cylinder, a turbocharged four-cylinder, a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid engine. This time, we compare apples to apples, though. Here, we will be comparing the two vehicles by equipping both with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. This Ford engine delivers 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It, too, utilizes an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

While both vehicles offer AWD, the Ford system provides good traction on the road. If off-roading is part of how you roll, you'll appreciate the Compass for its gutsy trail-busting abilities.

Looks matter.

With the Jeep Compass, there's that Iconic Jeep styling that you've come to expect. It starts with Jeep's traditional seven-slot grille. Regardless of which trim level you choose, there are various features that make their way to the fore. The trim levels include:Compass Sport

  • Jeep Compass Sport
  • Jeep Compass Latitude
  • Jeep Compass Latitude Lux
  • The Jeep Compass Altitude
  • Jeep Compass Limited
  • Compass Trailhawk
  •   Compass (RED) Edition
  • Jeep Compass High Altitude

The Ford Escape is available with a choice of seven trim levels. These include:

  • The Ford Escape
  • Escape Active
  • Ford Escape ST-Line
  • ;Ford Escape ST-Line Select
  • Escape Platinum
  • Escape PHEV
  •    Escape ST-Line Elite

Interior Style

Refreshed last year, the interior of the new Jeep Compass features an interior with nicer materials and a more grown up look than before. It includes a new 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay onboard. Order it with wireless Qi charging and even upgrade to an Alpine premium audio system.

If the highways are where you roam, consider the Compass's available Highway Assist system. It's an option on Trailhawk and Limited models and helps to bring partial autonomous driving to the Compass.

The Ford Escape features an interior that was refreshed for 2023. It is standard with a SYNC 4.8-inch infotainment system that can be upgraded to a 13.2-inch screen. In the second row are sliding rear seats. They allow you to adjust the legroom, which is less than friendly to those taller members of the rear-seat set.

Drive, We Said

The Jeep Compass and the Ford Escape are similarly-sized SUVs. While the two have 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, the Escape wins for power, but not by much. Thrust from the Jeep's Turbo-four keeps it running neck and neck with the Ford.

The Ford features an engine from the recently discontinued Focus ST. It's powerful and alludes to the fun of that dearly departed hot hatch. But that's not the purpose of the Escape.

There is a sense of refinement in the Jeep. That comes from new hydraulic engine mounts to reduce Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). In other words, the Jeep Compass is designed for comfort. It's also the perfectly sized vehicle for those who will be driving through a city center and parking with ease thanks to its compact-sized footprint.

But it's no slouch on the highway or off-road either. Make an appointment to test one today at the Napleton CDJR store near you.
